Cutting for Stone is the one of the best novels I have ever read, and I am recommending it to you. The characters and the settings are beautifully developed and the prose is poetic. Don’t expect to read this one in a couple of days. It took me almost two weeks, and I didn’t want it to end.
Much of the story takes place in the operating rooms of India, Ethiopia, and the United States ghetto. None of which I have any experience or original interest. Yet, the story is internally captivating and grabbed hold of my core by page 3. Read the rest of this entry »

I find it fascinating to read about the numerological significance of 11.11.11. And, I believe the true significance of 11.11.11 is the same as yesterday, and the same as tomorrow.
No one day is less or more significant than the others. For me, today is a day of mindfulness, an awareness of the ordinary miracles every day. Read the rest of this entry »

I am privileged and honored to work with the participants in Drug Court of Franklin County on the topics of mindful living and conscious parenting. Last night was our first workshop - “The Power Within You…to Heal Your Life.” I share my notes with you because I discovered they are not different than you and me. They are dealing with the same issues as my friends, and my family. And probably even more significantly, they have the same dreams for life as you and me. It was never more poignant that we are all learning the same life lessons, just through different circumstances. The goal is to raise our consciousness to a greater awareness of our lessons.

I am honored to have been asked to write this eulogy. That may seem strange, and I believe that is why I was asked. I tend to think differently. I find good in all things because I believe all things are good. And so you ask, “How are the circumstances for which we are here good?” For Aunt Bonnie, she is peace. For us, this is an opportunity to edit our lives. It is in these occasions that we understand death is the seed of new life. Read the rest of this entry »

Can you guess whose life purpose this is: To Spread Love & Laughter? This could be the purpose of a priest who adds comic relief with a ventriloquist show for children at the end of each mass. This could be the purpose of a circus clown of Cirque du Soleil. Or, this could be the purpose of a stay-at-home mom of three. It is not what you do; it is how you do it that matters. This is your individual contribution to the world. This is the cool thing: you get to give your life its meaning – not me, not your children, all you. You get the privilege to create the meaning in your life, to find the sacred in the ordinary. Read the rest of this entry »
